Jason Zan is Managing Director at Gibraltar Ventures responsible for, among other things, the execution of Gibraltar Ventures’ business strategy, managing existing venture investments and evaluating and recommending new investments for the Fund. With over 15 years of investing, operational and business start-up experience, he also brings with him significant experience managing and advising early stage technology investments. Prior to Gibraltar Ventures, he was the interim Vice-President of Finance and Operations at TribeHR, a SaaS-based human resources software provider, a firm he mentored since March 2012 and that was recently purchased by NETsuite Inc., an exit transaction that he helped close.
Prior to TribeHR, Jason was Senior Director at Rogers Ventures, the VC investing arm of Rogers Communications Inc., an organization he joined in 2001. In this capacity, he was responsible for venture activities and served as a Director of Scribble Technologies and as a Board Observer for each of Payfone and Gridcentric, all Rogers Ventures portfolio companies. Prior to Rogers Ventures, Jason held a variety of senior corporate and business development roles within Rogers Communications. In these roles, he was responsible primarily for managing Rogers’s private equity portfolio. These included investments such as Equator Technologies (acquired by Pixelworks), and SmartSync (acquired by Itron), MetaTV and CoaxMedia.
Throughout his career Jason has directly and indirectly been involved in start-ups and early stage opportunities, a skill-set that has served him well when dealing with entrepreneurs. For example, in 2006 he was CEO and co-founder of Tokiva Technologies a mobile VoIP app, where he grew the business to over 1 million users in under 12 months; in 2008 he helped launch Zoocasa, a Canadian online real estate media property; and in 1997 he was part of the founding team at iMoney, Canada’s first financial products e-commerce site (later acquired by Quebecor).
Jason obtained an Honors in Business Administration Degree (HBA) from the University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business in 1994, and is conversant in Cantonese.
